How are you doing? Are you in a slump?
Earlier this week I was thinking....man, January 1st seems so long ago. In the last few weeks we have all been through a major adjustment with the COVID-19 quarantine and it seems like the world has stopped in some ways. For many, however, their world has been flipped upside down because of this virus. Lost jobs, furloughs, quarantines, sickness, loss of business, and even more devastating, death of loved ones....
In January, many of us were wondering how we were going to make this year better - how we were going to become better moms, dads, sisters, neighbors; how we were going to get and stay healthy; and how this year was going to be an amazing one! (I hope you're all optimists and felt the same way too!) ;)
Is that New Year's Resolution still one you're working on? Has it changed? Did you give up?
Some of you might say, "what does it matter? There's a crisis going on and everything is just crazy right now! Who cares?!"
I started to feel that way, too.....I was hitting snooze more and getting up later and later each morning, and skipping some of the important steps of my morning routine (I was still praying, reading, writing, but skipping my affirmations and visualization). Like most people right now, I've fallen into a different rhythm - not all of it is bad. I've decided to focus on what matters most. But skipping some of my feel-good routine had started to affect me. I know what makes me feel great, yet I let the comfort of my cozy bed get the best of me. It's exactly as St. Paul says in Romans 7:15, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do."
We all get in a slump now and then. But we can't stay there. We have to rise up and start again. We have to keep going and continue to push through and do the things that we know make us feel great, physically, mentally, and spiritually. As Matthew Kelly says in his book, The Rhythm of Life, we have to take care of our legitimate needs - our emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual needs - on a daily basis. So, yes, we can have a day or two where we ditch the resolution(s), the routine, and structure; or even when we are down about this crisis and the effects of it in our life (which for some of you may be very difficult), but we can't stay in a slump.
Although this Holy Week reminds us of the pain and suffering Jesus endured for us, it is also a reminder of LIFE and RESURRECTION. He overcame the world!! And you know what? We will overcome this crisis! We will get past this. God is bigger than the Coronavirus!! And as we trust in him, continue to pray, believe, and do the things that we know we have to do (like, get to bed earlier, eat healthier, move our body, read the word, pray, and rest) in order to be emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, and physically fit, we will be more than conquerors (Romans 8:37).
We will see a victory in all this. And at the end of this weekend, on Sunday, we will say, "CHRIST IS RISEN!"
So, arise, my friends. The glory of the Lord shines upon you! (Isaiah 60)
Happy Easter, my friends!
